Italian Greyhounds Available For Adoption

Please note: There are dogs in rescue that are not shown on this site. Most dogs that come into the program are placed in approved homes without ever getting pictured here. If you are interested in a rescue dog, you should put in an application with your local rep and then follow up with him/her. You must complete this application prior to any contact with the rescue reps. Please do not waste your time e-mailing or calling if you have not filled out this application as we need it for reference when speaking with you. Filling it out will give you an opportunity to hear about dogs before they are even featured here.

NOTE ON HOUSEBREAKING: When we say an IG is "housetrained" or doing well that means we have babygates, use a crate, often don't have carpet and manage 24/7..please read about the breed. Housetraining is the #1 problem!

LEINIE - ANOTHER NOT AN IG!!!

(even min pins need a break....)

Leine is an adorable 1 year old, Miniature Pinscher that weighs about 10 pounds. Leine is crate trained and a fairly quiet dog who is doing well on housetraining. Leine loves other dogs and his favorite thing in the whole world is going for a jog or long walk or any kind of exercise! He also likes to snuggle closely with his person and be with the other dogs in his foster home. Leine travels well and enjoys going in the car too. He's fairly quiet in the house, happy to sit with his person or quietly in his crate but then is ready for a nice romp in the yard or down the street for a few miles. I think he would LOVE to do agility and I think it would be a confidence builder for him. Despite all these wonderful qualities, Leine has been in foster care for MONTHS because of a very sad and dark past! You see Leine is from a puppymill here in Wisconsin. If you aren't familiar with what these commercial breeding farms are like go to www.NoWisconsinPuppymills.com for more information. Leine was actually sold at the following auction http://www.cchs-petshelter.org/id90.html much like a piece of furniture or a car would be sold with little care to where he was going on where he has been....it's only about the money! These videos are heart wrenching but Leine is one of the lucky ones because instead of going into another puppymill, he got out of that life! However Leine bears many of the "scars" from that life. He is afraid of new people, new situations and absolutely PETRIFIED of men. He is more of a one person dog and has bonded very well with his foster mom. Not only does Leine get along so well with other dogs, he "finds comfort" in their presence (common among mill dogs) so he would do best in a home with other dogs. Leine loves to run and play in the yard and he could be a potential flight risk if frightened. For these reasons, Leine's ideal home would have a securely fenced yard. Men, children and new situations can frighten Leine..therefore an experienced dog owner with a quiet home and a lot of love and patience is what Leine needs to continue to make progress and deal with the emotional "wounds" left behind by the cruel life of the mills. Leine will be a "project" for the right person but showing one of these deprived dogs love, socialization and what life can be is so rewarding! Given the chance at a normal, happy life after his sad start in life, Leine will repay you with unconditional love and affection! If you have room in your home and heart for Leine, please contact Carol at star279@juno.com

LOUIE

Louie, age 6 was returned to rescue recently because of a change with his previous family. Louie is fawn and white with a white "heart on his forehead". Louie is one big bundle of love! This guy loves a good long walk or run in the backyard. He kennels up perfectly and never goes potty anywhere but outside. He is a little bigger in the middle section but by no means overweight. He is very loving and playful. Louie would make a great dog for a first time IG owner or as an only dog since he is so mellow and easy going. Louie never met someone he didn't instantly adore! Now he just needs someone to give him his forever home. For more info on Louie, email Carol at star279@juno.com

REGGIE

Reggie is a 1 year old male from the WI 57 rescue -to see more about that rescue, click HERE. Reggie gets along great with other small dogs but is shy and very attached to his one person. He is not for the first time dog owner and needs a patient home willing to build his confidence. Reggie is crate trained, leash trained and currently working on basic obedience. At about 10 pounds he's a petite Ig. Like most IGS, Reggie would be best in an adult home as the breed often doesn't like loud noises or quick movements. A fenced yard is not required but makes housetraining much easier for this breed that is already a difficult breed to housetrain. He is located in S WI. Watch for updates! Note: we do not ship dogs and only adopt out in the Midwest. An application is required to be considered for adoption. For more info on Reggie, email Carol at star279@juno.com

COCO

Coco is a 3 year old, 12 pound boy from the WI 57 - click HERE to read more about this rescue effort. He is a little shy with new people and situations, but is improving every day. Because of his lack of past training and socialization, he will need an owner who can help him build his confidence with obedience classes and socializing. He is very good with other dogs, and probably with cats. But his favorite thing is cuddling in your lap. Coco is crate trained and is learning to have good potty habits. For more info on Coco, email Carol at star279@juno.com

NINA

Nina is a 3 to 4 year old female from the WI 57 - click HERE to read more about this rescue effort. Nina is a 7 pound female that is indoor trained and outdoor trained. She is crate trained, but can be left loose with confidence as she is not mischevious. She loves to be outside in the yard, enjoying the sun and the grass. Nina also loves to run around the yard too, and can be an energetic little girl. She loves everyone, is very affection, and not afraid of people at all - given her rough past, that is pretty impressive. She is a very happy girl and her tail wags all the time! She is also learning to play with toys and other dogs. Nina is located in the Chicago suburbs. Note we do not ship dogs and only adopt out in the Midwest. An application is required to be considered for adoption. For more info on Nina, email Carol at star279@juno.com

THIS IS A PICTURE OF NINA AND CRICKET AT THE KENNEL - UPDATED PIX SOON!

CRICKET

Cricket is a 2 year old very tiny little girl from the WI 57 - click HERE to read more about this rescue effort. Cricket has made herself right at home in her foster. She is very affectionate, smart and is doing very well on her puppy pads indoors and goes outdoors as well. Cricket loves other IG's, other breeds and is great with house cats. She is very curious about everything. She is very eager to please and will do well in a home where she will have other dogs to play and snuggle with. As Cricket is very small at about 4lbs, larger breed dogs would not be a good fit for her. Like most IGS, Cricket would be best in an adult home as the breed often doesn't like loud noises or quick movements. Older, respectful children might be OK. She is located in S WI. Note: we do not ship dogs and only adopt out in the Midwest. An application is required to be considered for adoption. For more info on Cricket, email Carol at

BEA

BEA is an approximately 10 year old red fawn beauty from the WI 57 - click HERE to read more about this rescue effort. Bea is absolutely the sweetest girl ever! She has a face that makes you fall in love and a personality that is so sweet and loving. She lives to be loved. Bea had many puppies over the year, so she has lost her girlish figure, and her eyesight is not very good, but she can see well enough to follow you around the yard and in the house she gets around very well on her own. Bea's potty habits are very good, she crates well, and is a good leash walker. Bea would do well with a fenced yard, another small dog companion, and someone who wants to lavish the love in her that she so deserves. Bea would more than return the love you give. Bea is located in IN and will be adopted in-state or to a neighboring state only! For more info on Bea, contact Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

PRESTON

Preston is a very small blue and white IG boy from the WI 57 rescue - click HERE to read more about this rescue effort. He is about 8 months old and weighs just 6 pounds. Preston is very sweet and loves to be held and loved on. Like many of the 57, Preston is very much in need of someone to bond to, and will bond TIGHTLY to his person. Preston is crate trained, leash trained, and doing well with his potty habits. Preston would like a home with a fenced yard, and will need another small dog in his new home, as he has never been alone before. He also needs someone familiar with very small dogs - many of the tiny IGs from this rescue have an almost Chihuahua-like aspect to their characters. They are closer to being one-person dogs than the typical IG (who loves whoever they are with), they bond very tightly with their chosen person, and they would NOT do well with small children - loud noises and quick jerky motions frighten them. Preston is located in IN and will be adopted in-state or to a neighboring state only! For more info on Preston, contact Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

VITO

Vito is an approximately 2 year old sable colored IG who is from the WI 57 rescue - click HERE to read more about this rescue effort. Sable is a very unusual and beautiful color. Another unusual thing about Vito is that he loves everybody despite his rough start in life! He a larger IG who is social, sweet and loving. His potty habits are good, he crates well, and we are working on his leash training. He likes to go visiting and enjoys car rides. Vito gets along well with cats, dogs and kids. He needs a fenced yard to run and play in, and another small dog to play with. Vito is located in Indiana. He will be adopted to in state or bordering states only. For more info email Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

TOBY

Toby is a 1-2 year old male from the WI 57 - click HERE to read more about this rescue effort. He's a petite little guy weighing only about 5 pounds! Poor little Toby had a previous leg break that was left to heal on its own however that doesn't slow him down. He still jumps and plays! He gets along great with other SMALL dogs. (Due to his size and personality, he would not be a good candidate for a home with large dogs or children). Toby is crate trained and doing well on housetraining but may need to be indoor trained in the winter due to his small size. Toby is initially very shy but warms up to his people quickly and then could spend countless hours on your lap! Toby's ideal home would be one with other small dogs (Italian Greyhounds, Chihuahuas or other dogs about his size) and a lap available often to sit on and someone who understands shy or timid dogs. He will make someone a great companion as he learns what life is like now that he doesn't have to complete with 56 other dogs for a lap! Toby is located in S WI and will only be placed in the Midwest. We do not ship dogs. For more information, please read about the breed, complete an application and contact Carol at star279@juno.com

GARNET

Garnet is an 8 month old petite IG puppy weighing just under 6 pounds. Garnet comes from a commerical mill and was scheduled to be euthanized the day a caring person contacted our group to help her. Garnet was born with a severe knee problem and has no use of her back legs. She only walks on her front legs but is in foster care and learning how to balance and learning about life outside the wire pen she called home. Her front feet have marks embedded from the wire. Garnet has an appointment with a specialist in early August and IG Safehouse is committed to doing everything we can to help this girl so one day she can run like other puppies. Watch the site for updates. For more information, please email Carol at CLS@igsafehouse.org

SOPHIE

UPDATE!!! Sophie is an adorable eight month old Italian Greyhound who will greet you with wiggles and love every morning in exchange for lots of play and fun. She loves life and enjoys running around a fenced in yard and playing with other IGs or small dogs. She has started agility training in foster care and already has many of the basics down. Sophie is a gal who loves to learn new things and will work hard for treats and praise. She is indoor potty trained, but will go outside also. Sophie is doing well with her house training, but being indoor trained, she sometimes mistakes a rug in the kitchen or bathroom for her piddle pad. Despite occasional accidents, you can't help but love this adorable girl. She loves to learn new things, is gleeful over her achievements, is already crate and leash trained, and gets excited by just about any fun activity. Sophie will need an owner who is willing to continue some kind of training with her because she is too smart and active to only be a companion dog. Sophie spends a lot of time playing with the two other IGs in her foster home, so living with another small, active dog would be ideal for her. For more information on Sophie, please email Carol at CLS@igsafehouse.org. Sophie is an IGSA funded dog who will only be placed in Wisconsin or northern Illinois.

THE LUCKY LITTER!!

Here's our newest group of rescues here in WI (because apparently the WI 57 were not enough!) This lovely lady is Lucky, a sweet blue and white girl who unluckily found herself the mother of 5 and homeless. Lucky is about 18 months old, and very sweet. She should be about 12 pounds or so after she finishes being a GREAT mom and gets her girlish figure back. With her are her FIVE 4 week old pups - Ace, Trey, Jack and Casino, all blue and white boys, and Diamond, their blue and white sister. Their daddy, a fawn and white 18 month old boy named Deuce is also in rescue and we will get him up with the rest of the family as soon as we can get a picture. Deuce is about 15#, so these pups should grow up to be in the 12 - 15# range. The pups will be available for adoption at around 12 weeks (any one who sells you a toy breed puppy younger than 12 weeks is someone you should RUN from!) We will be providing individual shots when they are walking around on their own better. We will be taking apps for fantastic homes for both the pups and Lucky - but you MUST be able to provide the following: a home in the WI - IL area only! We do NOT ship! We will not do long distance adoptions!! If you are in a contiguous state to WI or IL, we might consider you if you can provide a truly exceptional home. Successful applicants will have a fenced yard, IG or other toy breed experience, another IG or small breed in the home, the ability to NOT be gone 8+ hours a day, a sincere belief in the absolute necessity of obedience classes, and a strong committment to socialization. If you have children under 11 years old, have relinquished pets in the past, or think our application process is too long or tedious, don't waste your time applying. As young pups, Igs are too fragile to live with small children, and if you apply for one of these pups, we WILL be checking your references and doing a home visit. For more info on Lucky and her litter, email Julie as igs4me@tds.net

DEUCE

Deauce is the daddy of Lucky's litter. He is about a year to 18 months old. He is a big boy, weighing in at about 18#, although he could stand to loose a couple of punds. He is very outgoing, very energetic, and LOVES big dogs. He would love a home with a larger sighthound - like a greyhound - to romp and play with. Deuce likes to cuddle, is crate trained, leash trained, and is doing well with his potty habits. For more info on Deuce, email Carol at star279@juno.com

STILTS

UPDATE!!! Stilts is a lovely deep blue fawn boy who is 4 years old. He is very friendly and sweet, does well on leash, is crate trained and is housebroken. He also gets along very well with other dogs, especially other IGs. Stilts is available for adoption and is located in St Louis. Out of state adoptions will be considered but we WILL NOT SHIP so his adopter must be willing to come to Missouri for him. Stilts is an IGCA funded dog (for more info on IGCA Rescue, please click HERE). For more info on Stilts, email Sue at eleganteigs@sbcglobal.net

LOUIE FROM INDIANA

LOUIE is a beautiful one year old male who is a larger IG. He is a typical energetic pup, but he is also quite well mannered. Louie has surprisingly great potty habits, great crate training, and leash walking skills. Louie plays well with other dogs and LOVES his toys. He also LOVES run and jump, roll and wiggle. His favorite quiet time activities include a lap to lay in and lots of love to be lavished on him. He is the sweetest, easiest IG ever! Louie is smart, quick to learn, and eager to please. He is looking for a home with a fenced in yard so that he can race around and burn off some of that energy. He'd also like another small dog (IG!!) to play with and hang out with. Louie is located in IN and will be adopted in-state or to a neighboring state only! For more info on Louie, contact Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

ROSIE

ROSIE is a beautiful red fawn and white 2 yr old female. Rosie is a great girl! She is social, sweet, cuddly, playful, has good potty habits, crates well and loves loves her yard! Rosie gets along with humans, cats, other dogs and older kids. Rosie is looking for a family with lots of love and a fenced yard to run in. She needs someone who has time to spend spoiling her. Rosie is located in Indiana and will be adopted in state of or to bordering states. For more info contact Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

LUIGI

LUIGI is a handsome blue and white male IG who is definitely 8 years YOUNG. Igs can live up to 20 years, so at 8 Luigi is still a young guy. He is a very well rounded boy - he has the best of everything! He is sweet and loving, gives kisses, but is still quite playful without being wildly energetic about it. Luigi loves to cuddle with his people, but also loves the company of other small dogs. Luigi has great potty habits - and will even scratch at the door to let you know he has to go out - and how many IGs do you find who do that? Luigi crates well, walks on a leash well, and enjoys car rides. He is particularly fond of snuggling under the covers with you at night. Luigi's thyroid is a bit sluggish. To keep him feeling his best, he needs an inexpensive pill 2 x daily. Hide it in peanut butter or cheese, and he thinks he is getting a treat. Prices vary by vet, but the current price for these meds is 250 PILLS FOR $23.00 - which works out to $7 per month. A tiny price for a huge amount of love! Luigi is located in IN and will be adopted in-state or to a neighboring state only! For more info on Luigi, contact Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

ANGELO

Angelo is a beautiful red fawn male who is about 5 years old. He came into rescue with his brother Enzo. It would be wonderful to place them together, but we will split them up if we have to. Angelo is crate trained, leash trained and does well with potty as long as there is a fenced yard. Angelo loves kids, loves to play, loves to take walks, and rides well in the car. If you have a fenced yard (NO EXCEPTIONS!) and are are looking for a wonderful larger IG, then Angelo is your boy. AND with Enzo (below)you would have an instant loving lapful! This is Angelo and Enzo's secnd trip through rescue in a year - thraough no fault of their own! These boys could really use a break and someone who is ready to make a sincere committment to them! Angelo is located in Indiana. He will be adopted to in state or bordering states only. For more info email Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

ENZO

ENZO is a beautiful blue and white IG who is 5 years old. This is his second time in rescue with his brother Angelo (above). We would love to place them together, but will split them up if we have to. Enzo is very sweet, but a little shy. He loves to be loved once he gets to know you. He would enjoy a home where he gets lots of attention. Enzo is crate trained, leash trained and does well with potty habits as long as he has a fenced yard. He does OK with older kids (over 7). He likes to get around - enjoying car rides and long leash walks. If you have a fenced yard (NO EXCEPTIONS) and want a truly loving companion, then Enzo could be your boy. And why not take Angelo too - email us, maybe we can do a two for one special? Enzo is located in Indiana. He will be adopted to in state or bordering states only. For more info email Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

BISCOTTI

Biscotti is a very sweet 4 year old blue and white male. Biscotti LOVES to be loved on. He wants to be where you are and is a great companion. Biscotti is crate trained, leaash trained, and does very well with his potty habits. Biscotti would love a fenced yard, another small dog, and a family who has time to pay attention to him. The ideal home would also need to be very understanding of the fact that he is very frightened by thunderstorms. Biscotti fine with older kids. He is located in Indiana. He will be adopted to in state or bordering states only. For more info email Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

MISS PRISS

MISS PRISS is a sweet 8 year old female black and white IG. Right now she is a bit of a chubby chick - although she is on a diet, trying to recover her svelte figure! Miss Priss loves to snuggle and to have love lavished on her - unfortunately, she has had too many TREATS lavished on her. Igs love a good cuddle, which would be a better reward for Priss than another biscuit. She can be a bit shy with new people, but warms up quickly. Priss walks well on a leash, crates w ell and has good potty habits. Her current diet is going quite well, and we expect her to be back down to a ravishing 12 pounds soon. Priss would love a family who would spoil her with love (NOT FOOD! ) and take her on long walks. A fenced yard would be nice, but is not a necessity for this little miss. Priss would also love another small dog or a cat for company when her family is not home. Older kids would be fine. Priss also enjoys going places and riding in a car. She is located in Indiana. He will be adopted to in state or bordering states only. For more info email Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

PARKER is approx 5-6 yrs old blue and white male ig. Parker is crate trained, leash trained and has the best ever potty habits. Parker will go to the door to let you know!! Preston loves to go for walks , and loves to run in a fenced yard. He is leash trained, crate trained and has good potty habits. Preston is looking for a forever home who has a fenced yard and another small dog to play with and snuggle with. Older kids are ok. Preston is an IGCA funded dog (for more info on IGCA Rescue, please click HERE) located in northern Kentucky and will be adopted in state or to bordering states. For more info on Preston please contact KIM at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

BAILEY

Bailey is a 4 yr old red fawn and white male IG. Bailey could be an only dog or live happily with other small playful dogs. He is crate trained, leash trained and has good potty habits. Bailey was a neglect/abuse case and has the scars to prove it. Given his hard life so far, it is not surprising that Bailey is a little shy but still warms up fairly quickly. He does well with other small dogs and cats but does not like large dogs. Bailey takes a inexpensive medication in pill form for sinus problems. Because he can be shy, we feel that Bailey would do best with a fenced yard. Bailey is an IGCA funded dog (for more info on IGCA Rescue, please click HERE) located in Indiana. He will be adopted to in state or bordering states only. For more info email Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com

SISSY - A SPECIAL NEEDS GIRL!

SISSY is a sweet two-and-a-half-year-old black and white girl with a terrific personality and a sense of humor! She gets along fabulously with cats and other IGs. She is petite, so a household with small non-aggressive pets is needed. Because of her spinning, she would be best in a home without small children. She is pretty active when playing in the yard with the other IGs in her foster home. Sissy has health issues that are not fixable, but can be managed. She has a condition called megaesophagus with low motility, and is a spinner. Both are due to what seems to be congenital neurological problems. Despite the spinning and the "megaE," Sissy lives a very good quality of life. She takes daily medications; one is a compound drug that a vet needs to prescribe to a compounding pharmacy, and she takes Nexium (or prilosec OTC can be substituted) once a day. There are special feeding directions with the compound drug meal (a.m.). As a result of the megaE, Sissy must be held in an upright/sitting position for 15-20 minutes after eating, and for 2-3 minutes after drinking water so that gravity will help the food and water go down, and minimize the risk of getting aspiration pneumonia (AP). She does get AP occasionally, and will need to see a vet and get antibiotics when this occurs. She will come with a stethescope that is used to listen to her lungs for any sign of breathing issues that need vetting. Sissy is happy and as healthy as she can be with her ailment. She will take patience, time, stability, and frequent vetting. The family will need to have a very close relationship to their vet. Dogs with MegaE do not live as long as healthy dogs, but can live good quality lives for several years. Sissy is an IGCA funded dog (for more info on IGCA Rescue, please click HERE) located in Indiana and will be adopted to Indiana or a bordering state only. If you are interested in learning more about Sissy, please contact Kim at topironhorse2000@hotmail.com
